Jazz Aotearoa is a non-profit limited company that was created to enable more and better opportunities for our artists, presenters, educators and audiences.

Our Aims / Kaupapa

  • Establish a community-led organisation that is the touchstone for jazz activity in Aotearoa.
  • Create a broad network between jazz artists, presenters, funders, and service providers
  • Publish content that assists with funding, creating new work, performance opportunities, and professional development
  • Encourage a more diverse jazz scene through broader inclusion and improving access to opportunities
  • Explore the potential of music publishing specifically for jazz from Aotearoa
  • Expand the audience for jazz from Aotearoa.
  • Create a national database of jazz activity to improve our networks and build a case for better investment in jazz from Aotearoa.

Jake Baxendale
Saxophonist, composer, bandleader for The Jac, Antipodes and JB3 among other projects, with an active gig schedule. Curates the Arthur Street Loft Orchestra, a series of large ensemble concerts presenting original music in Wellington.

Charlotte Crone
Charlotte Crone is a musician, video editor and concert coordinator in Christchurch. She studied jazz trombone and arranging at Ara Music Arts in Christchurch (2009-2011) and in 2016 joined the first line up of the All Girl Big Band, New Zealand’s premiere all female jazz big band. She has hosted hundreds of musicians and performers through Orange Studios through the Live @ Orange concert series.

John Rae
Originally from Scotland, John Rae is a prolific drummer, composer and bandleader, having recorded over 50 albums as a leader and side man, including two BBC Jazz Albums of the Year (2004 and 2003). He has a long history of commissioned projects and was instrumental in the founding of the Scottish Jazz Federation (now Jazz from Scotland). Rae is the leader and composer for the New Zealand jazz group The Troubles.

Caroline Manins
Caroline Manins is a vocalist, composer, bandleader and Doctoral Candidate in Performance. She is a founding director of the Creative Jazz Club Aotearoa and has taught jazz voice at the University of Auckland for the past 10 years.
